Job Summary:
The Pipe Preparator is responsible for preparing piping systems for installation, welding, and assembly in shipbuilding and offshore marine environments. This role involves pipe cutting, beveling, cleaning, marking, and identifying the proper fit-up according to technical drawings and marine specifications. Ensures all preparatory work supports high-quality piping systems and complies with marine and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Interpret and work from isometric drawings, P&IDs, and piping specifications.
Measure, cut, grind, bevel, and prepare piping materials (steel, copper-nickel, stainless steel, etc.) to required lengths and shapes.
Identify and mark pipe spools for fit-up and welding.
Verify pipe schedules, diameters, and wall thicknesses against specifications.
Prepare pipe ends for welding, ensuring proper bevel angles, cleanliness, and alignment.
Support pipefitters and welders by ensuring materials are ready for assembly and installation.
Maintain inventory and traceability of pipes and fittings.
Ensure compliance with quality control and safety procedures.
Coordinate with foremen, welders, and QA/QC inspectors to resolve preparation issues.
Use tools and machinery such as pipe cutters, grinders, and beveling machines.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or technical education in pipe fitting or fabrication (preferred).
2+ years of experience as a pipe preparator or similar role in the marine or shipbuilding industry.
Familiarity with marine piping systems and materials.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and standards.
Skilled in the use of pipe preparation tools and equipment.
Knowledge of welding preparation standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, ABS, DNV).
Basic understanding of safety and marine regulations.
